✍️ PETITION: Protect abortion access in Australia

When access to abortion is restricted, banned, or otherwise unavailable, women die or their health suffers.
Abortion was finally decriminalised in all states and territories just under three years ago, but unfortunately this progress is once again under threat.
This year, bills to restrict abortion rights have been proposed in NSW, QLD and SA.
It's part of a concerted campaign to wind back access to abortion, inspired by the success of anti-abortion campaigners in the US – and spurred on by One Nation’s policy to “seek every opportunity” to roll back “brutal” and “extreme” abortion law.
But the Australian community wants access to reproductive rights and healthcare protected. Australia Institute research shows that support for a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions is widely shared amongst Australians from across the political spectrum.

Recent attempts to restrict abortion access:
- In New South Wales, One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce was the headline speaker at an anti-abortion rally on 2 June 2026, organised by anti-abortion activist Joanna Howe in support of a bill to restrict abortion by Libertarian MP John Ruddick.
- In South Australia, a bill to ban abortions after 25 weeks, even in cases of severe fetal abnormalities, passed the upper house but was defeated in the lower house.
- In Queensland, Katter Australia Party MP Robbie Katter introduced a disallowance motion on 2 June aimed at stopping nurses and midwives from prescribing medical abortions.
- In Victoria, One Nation claim no plans to change Victorian laws, yet Leader Warren Pickering has called them "draconian" and attended an anti-abortion rally in 2024.
Polling shows support for access to abortion services:
- Only 8% of Australians do not support access to abortion services. 87% of voters support access to abortion services, of which 25% support abortion in “limited circumstances”.
- 84% of One Nation voters support abortion access, of which 34% support access in “limited circumstances”.
- Support for abortion access is strongest in rural Australia, where 90% support access to abortion, of which 24% say they support access in “limited circumstances.”
