Taxation shapes the society we want to live in, but too often the decision of how and who we tax — or do not tax — is shaped by vested interests, rather than what is best for most Australians.

We are in a cost-of-living crisis and, as the pandemic showed, public services and government support are crucial in addressing the needs and challenges of a modern society.

With the $20bn Stage 3 Tax Cuts set to come into place in July 2024, and windfall profits continuing in several key sectors of the economy, the time has come for a conversation about how we collect revenue, strengthen our public finances, and create a fairer society for all.

Speakers:

Barbara Pocock, South Australian Senator and Greens’ Spokesperson for Finance, Employment and Public Sector. Barbara is an economist and Emeritus Professor who grew up on a mallee farm near Lameroo and has worked in universities, shearing sheds, the Reserve Bank, on farms, in unions, for the government and as a mother and carer. She has spent her life fighting for the rights of women. As an Emeritus Professor at UniSA, she led a team of researchers studying how work affects women, men, children and the households and communities in which we live.

Matt Grudnoff, senior economist at the Australia Institute. Matt has published widely on a diverse range of subjects including taxation & tax concessions, the federal Budget, poverty & inequality, retirement incomes, free trade agreements, housing affordability, energy economics and climate change. Prior to coming to the Australia Institute, he worked at the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Department of Climate Change.

Noah Schultz-Byard, SA Director at the Australia Institute. Noah is a communications professional and former ABC reporter who now leads The Australia Institute’s presence in South Australia, focussing on issues of economic inequality, environmental sustainability and climate change. Having previously worked in the Federal Senate and as a communications consultant for a range of organisations, Noah has a passion for using evidence-based research to tell compelling and engaging stories about improving our community.
