✍️ PETITION: Make Big Tech pay when they harm Australians
If a tech company’s platform helps scam you or floods your feed with hate speech or eating disorder content, you should be able to hold it to account. Right now, you can’t.
One thing would change Big Tech's behaviour faster than any regulator: the right for you to seek compensation. It worked for asbestos and tobacco companies, and it will work for tech giants.
The Prime Minister is finalising this legislation right now, but he's facing public backlash from One Nation, the Coalition, News24 and the Trump administration that could pressure him to water down this Bill, when he should be making it stronger.
Sign the petition now to tell the PM to stand firm and make Big Tech pay for the harms it inflicts on Australians.
Because Big Tech is faciliating and profiting off harms on our online spaces, including child sexual exploitation, rape and death threats and online scams. They will only stop when it hurts their bottom line.
Australians want harsher penalties for Big Tech
Our research shows:
- Nine in ten Australians (93%) want online platforms to prevent illegal and harmful content.
- Four in five Australians (83%) believe that companies that facilitate illegal and dangerous content spreading online should at least be fined, half of Australians (50%) believe they should be fined and their executives should be jailed
- Seven in ten (72%) Australians agree that if an individual has suffered physical or mental health harm from content on an online platform, they should be able to seek compensation from the platform. Only one in eight (12%) Australians disagree.
To the Australian Government,
Hold Big Tech accountable by legislating a proper Digital Duty of Care that allows Australians who are harmed by tech giants to recover compensation, just as they can from asbestos and tobacco companies.
