✍️ SIGN: Demand the gas industry pays royalties!

Gas corporations are supposed to pay a ‘royalty’ for the right to extract and sell public resources – resources like liquified natural gas. But the Australian Government is failing to collect many royalties, effectively giving away over half gas exported from Australia – for free.

Instead of ensuring gas corporations pay their fair share to help fund hospitals, housing and schools, our government is instead helping them make billion dollar profits.

It has to end. We’re calling on the Australian Government to impose royalties on all gas extracted in Australia.

Around 80% of Australia’s gas is exported as liquefied natural gas (LNG). Most of this gas is extracted from Commonwealth waters, meaning the Australian Government could collect royalties (a payment for the use of public resources). However the Australian Government chooses not to charge royalties on gas feeding six of the seven LNG export terminals operating in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Australia Institute research has found that 73% of gas exported from WA attracts zero royalty payments. Gas royalties make just 1% of WA Government revenue, less than motorists contribute through vehicle registration.

That’s why we’re calling on the Australian Government to ensure the gas industry pays their fair share by imposing royalties on all gas extracted in Australia.

To the Parliament of Australia –

The gas industry does not make a fair contribution to the Australian community.

Australia Institute research has found that 56% of gas exported from Australia attracts zero royalty payments, effectively giving a public resource to multinational gas corporations for free.

Over the last four years, multinational companies made $149 billion exporting gas they got for free.

If royalties had been charged on this gas, at least $13.3 billion in revenue could have been raised and used to increase living standards of Australians by funding schools, hospitals, renewable energy, and other needed public infrastructure.

Our governments should stop putting the interests of foreign owned gas companies ahead of Australians.

We call on the Australian Government to impose royalties on all gas exported from Australia.
