Help us get this ad on a billboard

(Our designers are still working on the final design of the billboard, but here’s a draft of what it might look like.)

We’ve got a narrow window to act – and a plan to seize it. When Parliament returns, we want to flood Canberra with a wave of public messaging: on billboards, across radio waves, in newspapers – all pointing to one clear demand. No new coal or gas projects. That’s the line in the sand, and with your support, we’ll make sure the Government can’t ignore it.

Environment Minister Murray Watt is planning to rewrite our federal environment laws when Parliament sits again in a fortnight. This is necessary, because everyone agrees our existing laws are failing. But instead of working with the Greens and independents to strengthen them, Labor is reportedly only seeking a deal with the Coalition.

It means Australia’s new environment laws will need the support of people like Matt Canavan, who recently called for new coal plants to replace renewable projects.

It's no wonder then that these new laws reportedly remove “red tape” to speed up approvals and fail to include a climate trigger – a crucial safeguard to stop catastrophic fossil fuel projects.

The government is wrongly assuming the public prefers ‘sensible’ bipartisanship with the Coalition on climate change. But “bipartisanship” with the Coalition doesn’t make for good environment policies – evidence does.

Australia Institute research shows that Australia is currently expanding both gas and coal with 94 new fossil fuel projects under development, and that emissions have continued to increase. If the current laws allow for this level of destruction, a new deal negotiated with the likes of the Coalition could be catastrophic. It’s clear that our environment laws need updating – but they must stop new fossil fuel projects, not rubber stamp them.

Will you chip in to send a message to Environment Minister Murray Watt that Australians will only accept strong environment laws that can stop new coal and gas?
