✍️ ADD YOUR NAME: End the gas export scam

Australians are losing out to the gas export scam.

Australia Institute research shows that nurses pay more tax than gas and oil companies.

Meanwhile, multinational gas companies get 56% of our gas for free and then export it overseas.

Since our governments allowed these gas exports, our gas bills have tripled and our electricity bills have doubled.

Big gas is taking the piss and Australian governments are letting them. It has to stop.

Political Leaders on Australia's Gas Export Problem

Chris Bowen MP, Federal Energy Minister: “People say we have plenty of gas in Australia and that is true, a lot gets exported.”

Peter Dutton MP, former Opposition Leader: “…there’s gas already, obviously, that is being exported, but it’s not contracted to do so under the foundation contracts… We don’t need to rely on new gas wells, there is gas there now.”

David Littleproud MP, Nationals Leader: "“Australian gas should be able to be used by Australians first… we do have an abundance of gas.”

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, Greens Environment Spokesperson: “Massive gas corporations are exploiting loopholes to make massive profits off Australia’s gas. They get most of most of the gas for free, pay barely any tax, and ship it overseas for massive profits

Senator Pauline Hanson, Pauline Hanson's One Nation Leader: “Australia has enormous reserves of gas… and Australia is one of the world’s largest gas exporters.”

Senator Jacqui Lambie, Jacqui Lambie Network Leader: “When you look at all the gas that we export overseas its absolutely phenomenal. You have to ask why we have this much gas we’re exporting, and why we’re not getting our gas cheaper.”

Senator David Pocock, Independent ACT Senator: “Well, we know we don’t have a gas supply shortage. We have a gas export problem in Australia.”

How gas exports are driving up gas prices

Australia Institute research reveals that gas exports have led to the tripling of wholesale east coast gas prices and doubling of electricity prices, since exports began in 2015.

Until the mid-2010s, wholesale gas prices in eastern Australia were low.

Prices were substantially below those paid in other countries, due to the ample supply, modest demand and, crucially, gas companies’ inability to transport Australian gas to international markets.

All this changed with the decision to build gas export terminals in Gladstone, Queensland, that began shipments in January 2015.

Suddenly, gas companies were able to sell into higher-paying markets.

As was clear at the time, the effect of linking the east coast of Australia to international gas markets was to increase prices for Australian consumers.

Australian governments are meant to represent the interests of Australians, not multinational gas corporations.

Australia has a gas export problem.

It has to stop.

We call on the Australian Government to:

1/ Stop unrestricted gas exports.

2/ Reduce Australian domestic gas prices with uncontracted gas.

3/ Make gas exporters pay their fair share of taxes and royalties.

4/ Approve no new gas projects.
