We can’t just save the ABC, we need to fix it
Our research shows that the ABC is Australia’s most trusted broadcaster.
However, with the turmoil in ABC management and the reported political interference –– from the abrupt and unexplained sacking of ABC Managing Director, Michelle Guthrie, to the revelations that the then ABC Chairman himself pushed for the sacking of Emma Alberici after repeated attacks by then-Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, one thing is clear: it is not enough to simply save the ABC, we need to fix it.
At a time when so-called 'fake news' is at an all-time high, when Australia's media ownership is being further concentrated, and journalism jobs are being cut across the country, has there ever been a greater need for a strong, independent and trusted national broadcaster?
The ABC is at a crossroads: the coming months are a critical period for the ongoing future of the ABC.
Add your name to the open letter urging our political leaders to publicly guarantee they will safeguard the independence of the ABC and keep our public broadcaster, its Board and management free of political interference, as well as committing to funding the ABC adequately so it can fulfil its role as our public broadcaster.
