Fracking the Future
The unprecedented expansion of unconventional gas* in Australia is almost always justified on the basis of gas company claims about jobs and economic benefits. However these claims almost always exaggerate the benefits and ignore the many of the costs.
In fact, the experience and research shows that unconventional gas provides few jobs and has serious negative impacts on existing industries and the economy more broadly.
The Australia Institute has led the way in challenging industry spin on the economic impacts of the uncontrolled expansion of gas exports. Mark Ogge has travelled to regions impacted by gas development throughout Australia explaining the Australia Institute's research to local communities and other stakeholders. His presentation will explain the dynamics driving the gas expansion in Australia, the impacts and risks associated with the infrastructure, and the impacts on local industries and the broader economy.
