From Beijing to Rio: Competing Roads for NSW Economic Growth

Tue, Oct 23, 2018 6pm AEDT Preston Stanley Room, The Parliament of New South Wales

NSW is currently experiencing unprecedented economic growth - but is the government wasting the opportunity to set the state up for prosperity?

The NSW government’s economic plan revolves around massive spending on major macro-economic projects, almost entirely focused on road infrastructure and the civil construction sector. But it has done so at the cost of social infrastructure projects such as housing, education and health, where the investment in facilities and people are just as important in meeting the challenges of a growing state. This forum will present the costs and benefits of the competing models and pose the question: what is the best mix for NSW?

Dr Hugh McDermott MP, Chair, NSW Opposition’s Wastewatch Committee and Dr Richard Denniss, Chief Economist, The Australia Institute, will explore the failures of the state government’s economic approach to the needs of NSW and how such failures can be understood with reference to the worst extremes of the Chinese and Brazilian economic models.

Please join us for what will prove to be a thought provoking evening.
