Labor is considering curbing multinational gas exports in a bid to address rising Australian energy prices. It could be one of the biggest interventions to reduce the gas industry’s free ride in Australia we’ve ever seen – and one the Australia Institute has been calling for for years.

The catch? Labor is considering loopholes to let the gas industry off the hook, fail to bring down power bills, and increase new gas approvals.

The gas industry’s most powerful figures will be working around the clock to ensure Labor’s decision won’t affect their projects – or profits.

The gas industry gets a free ride

For years, Australia Institute research has shown that the gas industry gets a free ride, while ripping off Australians:

  • 80% of Australia's gas is used for export.
  • The amount of gas exported over the last five years could have supplied Australia for more than 20 years.
  • Gas exports have tripled gas prices for Australians and doubled electricity prices.
  • Australian students pay more in HECS than gas companies pay in petroleum tax.
