✍️ PETITION: Tax the gas industry its fair share

Right now, Australian beer drinkers pay more tax than gas companies pay in Petroleum Resource Rent Tax.

Gas export companies are reaping billions from Australian resources while paying little or no tax.

Australia Institute research shows a 25% tax on gas exports could solve the gas crisis – and raise $17 billion every year at the same time.

Australians are tired of rampant gas exports driving up power bills for Australian households and businesses.

Australians are tired of the gas industry not paying its fair share of taxes and royalties.

Australians are tired of endless excuses from governments who fail to stand up to the gas industry.

A 25% tax on gas exports could end the gas shortages being engineered by the gas industry, cut energy bills and ensure there is enough gas for Australians. And it could also provide $17 billion annually for better housing, health care, education and childcare.

✍ Sign here to support a 25% tax on all Australian gas exports.

With an extra $17 billion every year, Australia could...

On top of finally solving gas price and supply issues in Australia, this proposal would get a fairer share of revenue from gas exports for Australians, bringing us closer to the other gas exporting countries like Norway and Qatar.

With this extra revenue, the government could:

  • triple spending on housing
  • boost the government’s Future Made In Australia funding for manufacturing fivefold
  • cut the cost of prescriptions with an at least 58% increase to the pharmaceutical benefits scheme
  • double federal spending on public schools
  • or increase childcare subsidies by at least 75%

Australians already support a 25% tax on gas exports

  • Recent polling by the Australia Institute reveals strong nationwide support for a 25% tax on gas exports, with half of all voters supporting the proposal
  • The results also show that support for taxing gas export cuts across party lines, including among voters often seen at opposite ends of the political spectrum, such as the Greens and One Nation
  • This polling shows that Australians from all walks of life and across the political spectrum believe the country is not receiving a fair deal from the gas export industry
  • There is clear and overwhelming support for action

To the Hon. Jim Chalmers MP, Treasurer of Australia --

We call on the Treasurer and the Australian Government to put a 25% tax on all Australian gas exports.

This would end the gas shortages being engineered by the gas industry, cut gas prices, and could raise $17 billion every year to fund services for Australian households.
