A Budget Masterclass on how to read, understand and interpret Australian budget papers.

Being able to confidently understand and interpret budget papers is an highly sought after skill in media, advocacy and not-for-profit organisations.

The day before Budget Day, The Australia Institute is offering a one-day masterclass which will teach you how to make the most of your Budget lockup.

Economists David Richardson (Senior Research Fellow) and Matt Grudnoff (Senior Economist) from The Australia Institute will share decades of experience reading and deciphering budget papers. They'll give you tips to make sure you can find what you're looking for, uncover what the Treasurer hopes you'll miss, and show you how to avoid commonly made mistakes.

  • You work for a not-for-profit organisation which makes public commentary on the Australian Federal Budget
  • You need a rapid and assured comprehension of the key elements of the budget on the day of release
  • You are going into the Budget lockup on behalf of your organisation

Starting with the basics of the structure of Budget Papers, topics on the day will include:

  • How to get a 'Big Picture' understanding of the budget
  • Navigating the papers and finding what you're really looking for
  • Common mistakes and how to avoid making them
  • A short briefing on what is expected in the Federal Budget 2015-16

You will leave this Masterclass with improved skills and a new confidence as you enter the Budget Lockup.
