Emissions reduction targets won’t solve the climate crisis if they’re built on fiction.
Australia Institute research shows fossil fuels are the biggest source of carbon emissions in Australia – but the government is letting them off the hook.
The government is using creative accounting and false solutions to make emissions reductions look better than they really are – while approving multinational coal and gas exporters to expand their operations and fuel the climate crisis.
Despite the urgency of the climate crisis, the government keeps approving new gas and coal projects. Its latest approval, the North West Shelf gas export terminal extension, will have the same climate impact as adding 12 new coal-fired power stations.
Meanwhile, taxpayers are footing the bill. Last year alone, fossil fuel subsidies cost Australians $15 billion.
Australia cannot reduce its emissions while subsidising the expansion of the fossil fuel industry.
The government is supposed to represent us, not the fossil fuel industry.
