In April 2026, 57 countries gathered in Santa Marta, Colombia for the first-ever intergovernmental conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels (TAFF), a new plurilateral process built to do what the UNFCCC COPs have failed to: turn the promise to phase out coal, oil and gas into a concrete pathway to action. Tuvalu, one of the nations most exposed to climate catastrophe, will co-host the second TAFF conference with Ireland in 2027, carrying the "spirit of Santa Marta" forward to the Pacific and putting the world's most vulnerable countries at the centre of the fossil fuel phase-out agenda.

Australia claims to support this transition and has signed onto the Belém Declaration, but the reality at home tells a different story. We are the world's second-largest fossil fuel exporter, we still refuse to tax gas exports fairly, and our flagship climate policy leans almost entirely on carbon offsets that permit carbon pollution to increase, rather than reducing them. All the while, new coal and gas projects keep getting approved.
