We Need to Stop New Fossil Fuels

Australia’s Emissions Are Increasing, Not Falling — We Need to Stop New Fossil Fuels

The Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has just approved three new coal mines.

More than 39 of Australia’s leading environmental and climate organisations have called on the Australian Government to tell the world when Australia will stop approving gas and coal projects, when Australia will end native forest logging, and to commit to stopping the use of offsets to justify new fossil fuel projects.

While our leaders claim that Australia is on track to meet its climate targets of 43% emissions reduction by 2030, and net zero by 2050, Australia Institute research shows that when land sector emissions reductions are removed from the modelling, Australia's emissions are actually increasing.

Together, we'll call on the Australian Government to tell the world when Australia will stop approving new fossil fuel projects, stop native forest logging, and to stop using dodgy offsets to extend the life of the fossil fuel industry.

Dear Australian Government

World leaders convene this week at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York to recognise and accelerate the efforts required to prevent the most dangerous impacts of climate change.

But while Australia claims it is on track to meet its climate targets of 43% emissions reduction by 2030, and net zero by 2050, Australia Institute research shows that when land sector emissions reductions are removed from the modelling, Australia's emissions are actually increasing.

To ensure Australia is doing its fair share for a safe climate, we call on the Government to:

1. Tell Australians and the rest of the world when Australia will stop approving new coal mines.

2. Tell Australians and the rest of the world when Australia will stop approving new oil and gas projects.

3. Stop offsets being used to justify new fossil fuel projects.

4. End native forest logging.
