Victoria Needs Truth in Political Advertising Laws Before the Next Election

Victorians have waited too long for truth in political advertising reform.

Almost two years ago, the State Labor Government, Liberal Opposition and Victorian Greens all supported the recommendation in principle — guaranteeing majority support for new laws.

Since then, the 2022 State Election has come and gone — marred by misleading claims and lies about how to vote and the validity and integrity of the election, as well as fearmongering by candidates and interest groups that simply was not true.

In 2023, misinformation and disinformation swamped the Voice referendum campaign.

Whether it is an election or a referendum, voters should go to the polls armed with the facts. It is perfectly legal to lie in a political advertisement in Victoria — and it shouldn't be.

Australia Institute research shows that 9 in 10 Australians support truth in political advertising laws.

Regulating the truth is not impossible: we already do it. Australian consumer law requires truth in trade and commerce.

South Australia has had truth in political advertising laws since the 1980s, and the ACT recently legislated similar laws.

Victorians deserve Truth in Political Advertising Laws before the next election.

To the Victorian Parliament --

It is perfectly legal to lie in a political advertisement in Victoria — and it shouldn't be.

Almost two years ago, the State Labor Government, Liberal Opposition and Victorian Greens all supported the recommendation in principle. There is majority support for new laws.

Since then, the 2022 State Election was marred by misleading claims, lies and fearmongering.

Just as it is unlawful for companies to engage in deceptive or misleading conduct, Victorians
want laws to ensure political advertising is truthful and transparent.

Australia Institute research shows a majority of Australians, from across the political spectrum, support truth in political advertising laws.

We face an upcoming state election in which fake news and misleading claims about political opponents will only further erode trust in government.

We urge you to pass truth in political advertising laws that are nationally consistent, constitutional and uphold freedom of speech before the next state election.
