A Statewide Marine Plan for Tasmania

Tasmanian coastal waters have some of the highest marine biodiversity on earth. They support over 3000 jobs in fisheries, aquaculture, recreation, and tourism, are significant for First Nations people, and provide recreation for Tasmanians and visitors.

But poor government regulation has resulted in marine species being fished unsustainably, fish farms polluting coastal waters, chemicals from the land running into the ocean, and plastics polluting the marine environment.

Without a more comprehensive approach, Tasmanian communities and industries which rely on healthy oceans for their livelihood, recreation, and cultural sustenance will all suffer.

Australia Institute research shows that there is widespread community concern at the decline in the health of Tasmania’s coastal waters and an appetite for Government action to protect these natural places.

The Tasmania Government should adopt a State-wide Marine Plan that provides a scientific, economic and community-informed framework for the management of our marine environment.

We, the undersigned, call on you to protect Tasmania’s environmentally, culturally and economically significant coastal waters by"

Committing to a comprehensive state-wide Marine Plan.

  • This must be informed by comprehensive data on environmental, social and economic factors, and established through a science based, consultative, multi-sector marine planning process.
  • The process must assess where activities are compatible or incompatible with each other and with the marine environment to reduce conflict between uses.
  • The process must support First Nations communities, industry, and the broader community to participate in marine planning and management.
